Only living people bleed. I
came across of that phrase at a leadership conference a few weeks ago. I wrote
it down in my notebook not really understanding it at that time, but somehow I
knew it was important. Only living people bleed.
I tried thinking about that
phrase in the context of our hearts. We all have a heart. It pumps blood to our
entire body to provide the necessary chemicals
for us to stay alive.
Only a heart that lives for
God bleeds. If we start thinking in the context that our heart start aching
when we come across injustice, doesn’t that also mean that our heart is hurting
(bleeding)? I remember saying this prayer when I was younger. I told God that I
wanted to have His heart. Not knowing what it really meant (I still don’t), I
felt proud about it. But now as I look back, God is slowly opening my eyes to
the things of His. It means that we replace our heart with His. We begin to see
things the way God sees. Our heart begins to hurt when we see injustice. Our
hearts are filled with His compelling love to forgive our enemies. We begin to
feel for the broken and the lost.
Although I have not fully
understood who God is and what He is capable of doing (No one can), but I think
I have a clearer picture for myself of what it means to have God’s heart, and
that is feeling the pain and sorrow of people. Just as Jesus was moved with
compassion for the sick and needy, we are to follow in His footsteps. But I
must also say, that God’s heart is not subjected to only the sick and needy.
God is sovereign and He loves everyone the same.
God’s heart for us is to be
like Him. God’s heart for us is for us to prosper. No one can be God, but we
can be like Him. It is imperatively important for us to come to that
understanding that God sees us all the same. We are all His children bought by
the blood of His son, Jesus.
When we spend a lot of time
with a group of people, we begin to find ourselves more like them. Similarly,
we become more like God when we spend more time with Him. By reading His Word,
which is life, and talking to Him through prayer, we understand His ways more
and more.
So may I suggest one
thought? Our heart is only “living” when we begin to have a heart like Christ.
